Usagi Yojimbo Creator Stan Sakai Teases New Crossovers With TMNT | SDCC 2017

Both debuting around the same time in the 1980s, the anthropomorphic martial-artist animals Usagi Yojimbo and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a long-shared history. They've crossed over many times before, both in the pages of comics and even in animation, and it's something Usagi's creator Stan Sakai loves doing.

As you can see in the video below, the venerable creator sat down with SYFY WIRE at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 to talk about the latest iteration of this crossover and what makes it special.

"In this crossover with IDW, I really enjoyed it. I did the writing, I did the artwork, and it's in full color by Tom Luth," Sakai explained. "Usagi has met the Turtles before [in comics] but never this incarnation of the Turtles -- this is the Nickelodeon turtles, so they have to reestablish relationships."

Usagi Yojimbo is also guest-starring on the current TMNT animated series again, and Sakai got to actually write the first episode of that crossover!

"I did some black and white still artwork that was used for the flashbacks in the episode," he said, "it is absolutely amazing!" Fans at SDCC got to see the episode, and he said the reaction was incredible.

Check out the full interview below, and be sure to catch Usagi and the Turtles together again in brand-new episodes of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, beginning Sunday 23rd July 2017 at 9:00am ET/PT, only on Nickelodeon USA! Watch a sneak-peek now!
