Nickelodeon Acquires International Broadcast Rights For Rainbow's '44 Cats'

The Italian Rainbow Group has entered into a major broadcast agreement with Nickelodeon for its brand-new preschool property 44 Cats.


Through the agreement, Nickelodeon International will broadcast the animated series (52 x 13-minute episodes) around the world, excluding in the U.S. and Latin America, in 2019.

44 Cats is inspired by a popular Italian song and follows the adventures of Lampo, Milandy, Pilou and Polpetta, four homeless kittens who take on anthropomorphic traits when no actual humans are around. When they find shelter in a garage, they transform it into a clubhouse whilst helping out their neighboring peers.

44 Cats is a stunning CGI comedy show aimed towards children aged 3-6 years-old that combines music, edutainment, top quality animation and acting. The show addresses important themes such as diversity, friendship, altruism and helping others, elements that give the new pre-school property a huge international appeal to succeed in the global market.



The series is the first Rainbow Group production jointly developed with Bardel Entertainment, the Canadian animation studio it acquired in 2015, and also marks Rainbow’s (Winx Club, Regal Academy, Mia and me, Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends) inaugural foray into preschool programming. Italian broadcaster RAI is co-producing, and will premiere the toon later this year.

The news follows Rainbow partnering with Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) for the networks brand-new original eSports-themed scripted live-action series N00bees.

Rainbow launched 44 Cats at MIP Junior in Cannes in October 2017. The glittering cocktail party featured lots of entertainment, offering guests a taste of the show atmosphere. One of Rainbow’s artists was at the party to show how a 44 Cats character is drawn; a band performed hits including songs from the series and guests could enjoy funny moments dressing up as cats at the special 44 Cats photocall area, where an official photographer was on hand to take amazing snaps. The evening was a PAWsome success and the best way to celebrate the launch of such a meowing new show.

Claudia Spinelli to Oversee Project as Newly Appointed Vice President of Animation Development at Nickelodeon



BURBANK, Calif.--May 23, 2018--Nickelodeon today announced the development of a new animated project, Man of the House (working title), from Norman Lear's ACT III Productions. With creative concept by Colombian-American writer and illustrator Michael Molina (Trivia Night), Man of the House follows 11-year-old José as he helps his mother Maria watch over his two younger siblings, Maria Juliana (Maju) and Diego, while trying to form a hip-hop group with his quirky classmate and neighbor, Wilbur, that lives downstairs. Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons) and Brent Miller (One Day at a Time) will serve as executive producers.

The development of Norman Lear's project will be overseen by Claudia Spinelli, who has been promoted to the role of Vice President, Animation Development. Formerly Vice President of Current Series, Spinelli will oversee the development pipeline of all new animated content, while identifying potential creators, showrunners, writers and directors. She will also work closely with Nickelodeon's talent relations department and the animation community to scout new talent for animation development.


"Norman has been telling stories about families, parents and kids for many years, and it's so exciting that he and his producing partners Brent and Michael, want to tell this story to today's generation of Nick kids," said Chris Viscardi, Senior Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation.

Viscardi continued, "I am also incredibly excited that Claudia will oversee the development of this project, among many more, as Nick's new head of development. Claudia has shepherded some of today's most popular series including SpongeBob Square Pants and Sanjay and Craig. She is a true creative partner and a trusted voice with a love for storytelling. I look forward to her continued leadership in our animation group."

Spinelli began her career at Nickelodeon in 2000 in the development department. In 2002, she expanded her role by joining the Current Series group as a creative executive overseeing the brand management of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron and Avatar. Throughout her career at Nickelodeon, she has also worked on animated shows Sanjay and Craig, Robot and Monster, Making Fiends, and Planet Sheen, among others. As SpongeBob SquarePants grew in popularity, Spinelli was elevated to Executive in Charge of the series in 2007. For the past decade, her work on SpongeBob SquarePants has extended beyond the show as she has helped initiate projects throughout other areas of the company including: marketing partnerships with Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; SpongeBob SquarePants theme park attractions; video games featuring the iconic character; and the most recent debut of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, which was recently nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

Spinelli holds a BFA in film from New York University. She also earned an MFA in Animation and Digital Arts from University of Southern California, where later she taught a class on Introductory Principles of Motion for Animation for the Interactive Media Department. In between her degrees, Spinelli has held a number of positions in various animation houses in New York City on commercials and short films.

Founded in 1985 by television icon Norman Lear, ACT III Productions is a media company dedicated to creating and or producing content that not only entertains, but also creates a conversation and is best known for producing popular films including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride and Fried Green Tomatoes.

Brent Miller, Lear's producing partner and head of production and development for the company, also serves as an executive producer with Lear on projects including the critically acclaimed reimagining of One Day at a Time, documentary series America Divided, and upcoming pilot Guess Who Died.

After graduating from Columbia University in New York City, Michael Molina produced sketch videos and feature film, Trivia Night, with comedy troupe Local Empire before relocating to Los Angeles. Molina has also written educational animated TED talks that have garnered millions of views online, covering topics ranging from déjà vu to vampires.

Viacom's SpongeBob Keeps Rights To 'Krusty Krab' Restaurant Name

Aye, aye, captain: the rights to The Krusty Krab, the fast-food establishment featured in Nickelodeon's hit animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, belong to Viacom Inc. and not to a Texas restaurateur hoping to open a seafood chain with that name.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 3-0 on Tuesday (22nd May 2018) that Viacom deserves trademark protection for The Krusty Krab, and that IJR Capital Investments LLC and its owner Javier Ramos cannot use it for their restaurants.

Circuit Judge Priscilla Owen wrote that Viacom proved that diners would likely be confused if IJR used the name The Krusty Krab, the restaurant located in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom where SpongeBob works as a fry cook.


She also said while Viacom had not registered “The Krusty Krab” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the name was important enough to the SpongeBob series to deserve trademark protection, despite not being the title.

Owen said The Krusty Krab has appeared in 166 of 203 SpongeBob episodes since its 1999 premiere on Viacom’s Nickelodeon network, as well as in two feature films.

She said that made it like the Daily Planet, the newspaper that employed Clark Kent in Superman, and the orange General Lee muscle car from The Dukes of Hazzard, both of which received trademark protection in earlier court rulings.

“In the minds of consumers, The Krusty Krab identifies the source of products, which is Viacom, the creator of the SpongeBob SquarePants fictional universe and its inhabitants,” Owen wrote.

A lawyer for IJR and Ramos did not immediately respond to requests for comment by Reuters.

Ramos claimed not to have heard of The Krusty Krab when he began fishing for a name, and chose it after checking Google and finding no restaurants using that name.

Viacom and its lawyers also did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday’s decision by the New Orleans-based appeals court, which upheld an April 2017 dismissal by U.S. District Judge Gray Miller in Houston.

The case is Viacom International Inc v IJR Capital Investments LLC, 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 17-20334.

Nickelodeon USA To Premiere 'The Karate Kid' (2010) On Sunday 27th May 2018

When his mother's career results in them having to move from Detroit to China, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) finds that he is a stranger in a strange land. Bullied and beaten up by some fellow students in his school, Dre is rescued by martial-arts master Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), his apartment building’s handyman, who is mourning a devastating loss. Mr. Han takes pity on Dre and agrees to teach him kung fu to defend himself in the hope that Dre will be able to face down Cheng and perhaps win the heart of a pretty classmate named Meiying (Wenwen Han). Nickelodeon Netherlands And Jantje Beton To Hold Buitenspeeldag 2018 On Wednesday 13th June 2018

Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) has announced the exciting news that they have partnered with Jantje Beton, an organisation dedicated to providing youth services, to hold the 11th edition of Buitenspeeldag, Nickelodeon Nederland's localised version of Nickelodeon's "Worldwide Day of Play", on Wednesday 13th June 2018!


For Buitenspeeldag 2018, Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton are inviting everyone to help make the Netherlands one big playground, and to organise and register activities on Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton's giant map, so that thousands of children across the Netherlands can go outside and play, whether in a garden, in a park or at a playground!

On Wednesday 13th June 2018, games will be anything but boring or unsafe. Throughout the Netherlands, streets will be closed and places will be transformed into giant playgrounds so that children can enjoy a day of fun and games with friends!

Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton are calling on municipalities, parents and caregivers, playgrounds, schools, youth clubs, youth organisations and associations to help turn the Netherlands into one of the biggest playgrounds on the planet by organising tons of fun activities for kids! Activities can then be submitted to be placed on Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton's Buitenspeeldag 2018 map at www.jantjebeton.nl/buitenspeeldag! At the time post publishing, more than 750 schools, companies, neighbourhood associations, parents, municipalities and children have reported an activity!

Henry Hart's animated exploits as Kid Danger will unfold in Nickelodeon’s newest series, The Adventures of Kid Danger, which made its debut on Nickelodeon Benelux on Friday 18th May 2018 at 18:00 uur on Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) and at 18:45 uur on Nickelodeon Belgium (België; Flanders)! The 10-episode series follows the heroic Kid Danger and Captain Man as they embark on brave new adventures—battling bizarre criminals and super villains with their sharp wit and amazing crime-fighting skills. Locally titled De Avonturen van Kid Danger, new episodes of The Adventures of Kid Danger will continue to air regularly Fridays at 18:00 uur on Nickelodeon Nederland and at 18:45 Nickelodeon België.

Prior to the episode, viewers were treated to the brand-new Henry Danger episode “Blijf kijken voor meer Danger,” when Henry and Ray get a copy of the new Kid Danger and Captain Man cartoon and see that there’s trouble, they must hurry to fix the cartoon before the big premiere party. Olympian Shaun White guest stars as himself.

The half-hour animated series, based on characters from TV’s number one kids’ series Henry Danger, will reveal brand-new areas of the superheroes’ headquarters for the first time, including the Man Cave tube system, which propels the crime fighters into adventure; and the Man Hanger, filled with crime-fighting vehicles and gadgets used on missions.


For the US-English dub of The Adventures of Kid Danger, the original Henry Danger live-action cast continue their roles, now as voice talent, on the brand-new animated series: Jace Norman as “Henry Hart/Kid Danger;” Cooper Barnes as “Ray/Captain Man;” Michael D. Cohen as “Schwoz;” Riele Downs as “Charlotte;” Sean Ryan Fox as “Jasper;” Ella Anderson as “Piper Hart;” and Jeffrey Nicholas Brown as “Mr. Hart.”

In the series premiere, "Popcornmonster,"; when Ray and Henry’s cloning experiment to create two identical pieces of popcorn accidentally creates the Popcorn Monster, it’s up to Captain Man and Kid Danger to take it down. Next in "Droneduel", Ray says he doesn’t want to enter the Swellview Drone Dash because Dr. Minyak always wins, so Schwoz hatches a plan to shrink Kid Danger and have him pilot his own drone.


The Adventures of Kid Danger first found life as a Nickelodeon short-form “motion comic” digital series, which debuted July 2015 in the USA. New episodes of live-action Henry Danger will continue to premiere on Nickelodeon throughout 2018.

Online at nickelodeon.nl and nickelodeon.be, fans can watch the first episode of De Avonturen van Kid Danger, "Popcornmonster / Droneduel" dubbed in Dutch. Fans can also visit Facebook and Instagram to learn more about The Adventures of Kid Danger.

The Adventures of Kid Danger is created and executive produced by hitmaker Dan Schneider (Henry Danger, Game Shakers, iCarly) and produced by Powerhouse Animation, which also produced the short-form series.

The The Adventures of Kid Danger TV series (originally titled The Adventures of Kid Danger and Captain Man) made its world premiere on Friday 19th January 2018 on Nickelodeon USA, and is expected to roll out on Nickelodeon channels and programming blocks globally in 2018.

Nickelodeon USA Debuts Nick Jr. Rebrand

Nickelodeon USA today launched a all-new on-air brand refresh for its flagship preschool brand, Nick Jr.!

The refreshed the on-air look and feel incorporates real kids playing with Nick Jr.’s most iconic preschool characters in both animated and real-world environments. The fresh, bright and colourful on-air presentation is intended to reflect the playfulness and imagination in kids' lives and support on the network's mission of making the world a more playful place. More than 400 deliverables including bumpers, IDs, lower thirds, parent-directed curriculum messages and promo packaging will initially roll out in the US, followed by international channels later this year.

As part of the refresh, Nickelodeon USA has also renamed its popular daytime preschool programming block to "Nick Jr. on Nick", whilst Nickelodeon's 24/7 Nick Jr. preschool channel is now called "Nick Jr. Channel".

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nickelodeon has renewed some of the biggest hits in preschool TV: PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Rusty Rivets and Top Wing. The renewals--a sixth season of PAW Patrol, a fifth season of Blaze and the Monster Machines, a third season of Rusty Rivets and a second season of Top Wing--are part of the network’s largest preschool content pipeline ever of more than 300 returning hit shows and new series for the 2018-2019 season.

Nickelodeon is currently home to eight of the top 10 preschool shows on all TV, including number-one ranked PAW Patrol, followed by Blaze and the Monster Machines, Rusty Rivets, Shimmer and Shine and Thomas and Friends. Year to date, Nick ranks as the number-one basic cable network for Kids 2-5, Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11.


In the sixth season of PAW Patrol (26 half-hour episodes, produced by Spin Master Entertainment), the heroic pack of pups--Chase, Marshall, Rubble, Skye, Rocky, Zuma and Everest--transform into the greatest team of superheroes the world has ever seen--Super PAW. Joined by new superpowered friend Tracker, no danger in Adventure Bay will be a match for the rescue pups’ incredible speed, high-flying or super-strength abilities. PAW Patrol features a curriculum that focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem solving.


Season five of Blaze and the Monster Machines (20 half-hour episodes) takes all terrain to a new level with monster-sized racing adventures. Monster truck Blaze and his eight-year-old driver AJ will travel over land, under the sea and into orbit as Blaze transforms into awesome new vehicles designed to push the limit while helping his friends cross the finish line. The series is the first preschool show on TV to comprehensively cover all areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in every episode.


In the third season of Rusty Rivets (26 half-hour episodes, produced by Spin Master Entertainment), Rusty and Ruby go on all-new, larger-than-life adventures as they discover new locations with their amazing robotic dinosaur builds which include an awesome brontosaurus Mobile Rivet Lab, a speedy robotic raptor, and a daredevil robotic pterodactyl. Inspired by the DIY culture of the maker movement, Rusty Rivets helps preschoolers gain confidence and fuel their creativity with a focus on inventing, creating and problem solving.


Season two of Top Wing (26 half-hour episodes, produced by 9 Story Media Group) follow the cadets--Swift, Penny, Rod and Brody—as they graduate to a new level and tackle all-new, action-packed rescues on land, through the sea and in the air. With the help of their upgraded HQ Command Flyer, and brand-new uniforms and vehicles, the pilots will put their new-found rescue skills and teamwork to the test as they help those in need. BURBANK, Calif.–May 22, 2018–Get ready for a summer full of Double Dare, as Nickelodeon sets Monday, June 25, at 8:00 PM (ET/PT) as the premiere date for the iconic game show’s return. Digital creator and actress Liza Koshy has been tapped to host the brand-new version of Double Dare, where a new generation of fans will compete in the messiest and most physically challenging competition of their lives.

Bringing together new fans and the iconic game show’s millennial audience from the ‘90s, original series host Marc Summers returns to give color commentary on the challenges, lending his vast knowledge of the game and expertise to each episode.

Nickelodeon’s new Double Dare will also spill off of the screen and into the real world this summer, connecting to fans both old and new in a series of forthcoming location-based live experiences. There will be opportunities for fans to play Double Dare in on-the-ground versions at VidCon 2018 in Anaheim, Calif., and all summer long at Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America in Minneapolis.

Double Dare premiered on Oct. 6, 1986, on Nickelodeon, and ran from 1986-1993, making it the network’s longest running game show. Marc Summers served as the show’s original host from 1986-1993. Shortly after its debut, Double Dare became one of the most popular original daily programs on cable television. The series went into syndication in 1988, and was later revived as Super Sloppy Double Dare in 1989. The show also ran on broadcast television as Family Double Dare in 1988, followed by new versions on Nick, including Double Dare 2000.
